The Neon Demon nos cuenta la historia de una joven aspirante a modelo y su camino al reconocimiento. Por supuesto, no todo será glamoroso cuando conozca la cruel competencia y envidia que hay en el medio.

El punto más destacado recae en la fotografía, que nos envuelve desde el primer minuto en una estética que explota de colores: un elemento que será de tanta importancia como la que se da en Suspiria, de Darío Argento (solo por citar un filme donde el criterio del artista fue crucial). Con una música synthwave como banda sonora, vamos conociendo una ciudad donde la apariencia lo es todo, donde cada ser humano parece vestir una piel de inocencia que esconde intenciones aterradoras. Aquí es donde el film consigue su mejor acierto: la dualidad en las situaciones… el humo y espejo, que domina una industria donde las personas son más que desechables, incluso consideradas así por ellos mismos. Cuando se llega a determinada edad (en promedio, a los 21 años), parece que no hay nada más que hacer en el mundo que plantea The Neon Demon. Al menos, no si se quiere triunfar.

El desarrollo de la protagonista pasa desde una introvertida adolescente que llega de un pueblo con grandes sueños hasta una mujer que domina a las personas que la rodean, con su deslumbrante belleza. Ella despierta la envidia de sus colegas que, a pesar de todo su esfuerzo por destacar, terminan relegadas a un segundo plano ante la chica nueva. Cada uno de los personajes quiere un pedazo de ella, y luchará por conseguirlo.

El terror que construye The Neon Demon actúa de manera sigilosa; no trae una sorpresa en los primeros actos ni nada que se escape al desarrollo del personaje, más que las obvias intenciones de los protagonistas. Pero, llegado el tercer acto, la historia toma matices distintos, aunque esto no se siente forzado en ningún momento, ya que hemos tenido las suficientes escenas para considerar esta última parte como algo lógico dentro de su planteo. Con reminiscencias de la condesa Bathory, de ciclos lunares y triángulos invertidos, el director nos propone una historia que no será para todo entusiasta del género, ya que la premisa no se basa en asesinos con máscaras o en demonios medievales. En este caso, el terror nos introduce en la vida cotidiana en una ciudad que posee varias aristas, de las cuales todas llevan a la fatalidad.

El estar solo puede ser aterrador, pero lo es aún más cuando uno se rodea de desconocidos… y todos quieren carne fresca.
